Volunteer Spotlight: Grace Hinton

Mapping Prejudice would not exist without the efforts of our volunteers. Community members volunteer their time transcribing property deeds to help build our map of racial covenants. Their contributions are essential in illuminating the history of racist housing practices, the legacies of which we are still living with today. Meet volunteer, Grace Hinton.

Mapping Prejudice is truly a community effort, and we are so grateful to all of our dedicated volunteers. One of our volunteers, Grace Hinton, describes why uncovering the history of entrenched systems of racial inequality strengthens our fight for justice:

Why did you decide to volunteer for Mapping Prejudice?

“I’ve always loved history, and I think it has a lot of community value, but so often people interact with the past in passive ways. I believe that the key to working through many of the issues our community faces today is understanding how we got to this point. Without knowing the underlying factors at work, it is hard to move forward.

“The first step toward eradicating racially biased social, economic, political, and cultural structures is making people aware of their existence and influence.”

I think projects like Mapping Prejudice can change how individuals see the community, especially how marginalized groups have been continually affected by institutionalized racism. The first step toward eradicating racially biased social, economic, political, and cultural structures is making people aware of their existence and influence. Mapping Prejudice is a step along the way towards healing the deep racial scarring that still plagues our community.”
