A Socially Distant Hello

Dear Mapping Prejudice community!

We appreciate each and every one of you. We have learned so much from you during presentations, work sessions, and screenings of the Emmy-award winning documentary, “Jim Crow of the North.” You have shown us why it is important to understand the history and legacies of racial covenants. Of course, we haven’t been able to see much of you lately. As everyone knows, the kind of face-to-face encounters that have fueled Mapping Prejudice have been on hold since March. That’s when Mapping Prejudice joined other organizations and cancelled its public events in response to the threat from COVID-19.

This pandemic has fundamentally changed the landscape for community-powered research like Mapping Prejudice. We want to remain connected with you, despite the crisis. We hope that you will help us to figure out ways to move forward with this process of grappling with the past, even though the future seems so uncertain.

Mapping Prejudice has launched an effort to identify racial covenants in Ramsey County.
  • Mapping Prejudice’s Maggie Mills has created a new training video to show you what to do. Watch this introduction and then join Maggie and Penny Petersen for one of our new volunteer sessions.
  • Penny and Maggie are working with the “Welcoming the Dear Neighbor” team from St. Catherine’s University to create a collaborative online space to continue the work that we started in Hennepin County.
  • Register for one of these events and then spend an hour hanging out with the Mapping Prejudice team and other volunteers without leaving home.
  • Let us know if your organization would like to co-host an event. We are looking for community partners.

Does my house have a covenant?

Most people have one question when they hear about Mapping Prejudice. Does my house have a racial covenant? For years we responded by counseling patience. We promised that once the dataset was complete, everyone would be able to satisfy their curiosity. That wait is finally over.

More than 3,000 volunteers contributed 14,000 hours of labor to this map of racial covenants in Hennepin County. Click on the “Explore” button on our main map page or use this direct link to see an interactive map of covenants in Hennepin County.

Click on the magnifying glass icon in the lower left-hand corner. A “search” box will then appear. Enter an address in the search box. Select the search icon and then enter any address in Hennepin County to see whether a racial restriction was attached. Click on the property parcel to display the text of the covenant and the date it was put into place.

Property owners in Hennepin County can fill out this form to “discharge” the covenant. The Hennepin County Recorder’s office has prepared this checklist to help people who want to renounce these racist legal clauses.
Educator's Guide

The shift to remote learning brought a wave of inquiries from educators looking for online resources. Mapping Prejudice has responded by creating this toolkit, which teachers can use to engage students around the history of racial covenants, segregation and white violence in Minnesota. The topic of structural racism has a new urgency in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. This guide is meant to help students understand why we started this crisis with such huge racial disparities. As the public health emergency exacerbates these inequities, this history is critical to understand.

Mapping Prejudice by the Numbers

Work on the map of Ramsey County has begun. We are excited to welcome 464 new volunteers to Mapping Prejudice. These new volunteers join 2,964 other community researchers who helped us make history in Hennepin County. Thanks to all of you, we have already reviewed 14,157 property deeds from Ramsey County.
