Notes on Pedagogy: Mapping Prejudice Educator Resources

Since the project began in 2016, Mapping Prejudice has brought our research into hundreds of spaces through presentation, volunteer sessions, and workshops. From the beginning, educators have asked for resources to bring Mapping Prejudice into the classroom. This month, Maggie Mills, shares details about how to access and use the educator resources that we’ve developed through working with educators and students.

Action Guide Available on Website

If you are looking for ways to further your involvement in confronting structural racism and housing discrimination, check out this action guide. The guide was created by University of Minnesota students within the Humphrey School of Public Affairs. It breaks down the relevance of racial covenants and their legacy today; policies to be aware of regarding reparation efforts; useful terminology to know; and organizations to support in the Twin Cities.

Minnetonka Church Grapples with Racial Covenants

On January 10th, Mapping Prejudice team members Kirsten Delegard and Penny Petersen led the Unitarian Universalist Church of Minnetonka in a virtual training session dedicated to unearthing racial covenants. This is following the church’s to address and renounce the racial covenants found in the property deeds that the church was built on about 10 years ago. Along with Mapping Prejudice, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Minnetonka has been reached out to Just Deeds for help with renouncing the racial covenants. Mapping Prejudice Honored with Sweet Potato Pie

Mapping Prejudice has been honored with a Sweet Potato Comfort Pie Award. Sweet Potato Comfort Pie has been partnering with the Minnesota Humanities Center to convene community conversations that “examine how protests and uprising can drive systemic change and how African Americans can be honestly seen, sincerely heard, and fully empowered within our democracy.” You can read more about the Sweet Potato Comfort Pie initiative from founder Rose McGee here. This award reaffirms the work that Mapping Prejudice is doing to expose systematic racism in housing.

How Mapping Prejudice Extends its work beyond Academia

The home ownership disparity between Black and white households in Minneapolis is one of the largest in the nation. Mapping Prejudice aims to create a visualization of how racist housing covenants from the early twentieth-century still impact contemporary housing patterns. The work of Mapping Prejudice extends beyond the ivory tower of academia -- engaging the community, and influencing action to address housing discrimination in the Twin Cities. New Volunteer Transcription Sessions: Ongoing

Please join the effort to identify racial covenants in Ramsey County. Start by watching this training video. Then join Maggie Mills and Penny Petersen for one of our new volunteer sessions. Penny and Maggie are working with the “Welcoming the Dear Neighbor” team from St. Catherine’s University to create a collaborative online space to continue the work that we started in Hennepin County. Register for one of these events and then spend an hour learning from project leaders about how you can contribute to this important effort.

Channeling Anna Arnold Hedgeman: Laying the Foundations for Gender and Racial Justice: February 10th

The Hubert H. Humphrey School of Public Affairs is hosting a virtual panel discussion on February 10th from 1PM CST to 2PM CST. The panel will center on the legacy of Anna Arnold Hedgeman -- Hamline University’s first Black graduate, and the only woman on the organizing committee for the 1963 March on Washington. Community Spotlight

St. Joan of Arc Church Hosts MLK Day Program

St. Joan of Arc Church virtually hosted their annual MLK Day concert entitled “No Turning Back.” The program was hosted by Dan Chouinard, who grew up in Richfield. Reflecting on his childhood, Chouinard explores what growing up in a racially covenanted neighborhood meant for his white family in the 1960s. Throughout the concert performers reflect on the ways that racial policies and practices shaped their childhood and understanding of home. You can watch the full video on Youtube here.

Our volunteers are incredible! We are transcribing thousands of deeds each day. So far we have completed more than 237,479 of 248,020 deed transcriptions necessary to map covenants in Ramsey County. This means we are 96% complete! If our 5,687 rockstar volunteers continue working at their current pace, we will finish Ramsey County transcriptions in 7 days!
