On August 29, our citizen researchers finished the herculean task of combing through 177,343 historic documents from Hennepin County in search of racial covenants.
Our Zooniverse page went dormant. And we cheered.
This is a moment for celebration. When we launched this project, we imagined harnessing the power of community to build the first-ever comprehensive map of racial covenants for an American city.
You responded, with gusto. We are humbled and grateful.
Mapping Prejudice Project Director Kirsten Delegard was one of the people interviewed for the “Curious Minnesota” feature in the Star Tribune. The piece explored what Professor Samuel L. Myers, Jr. has called the “Minnesota Paradox.” It was a response to readers who wondered why Minnesota has such acute racial disparities.

State of the Map
Mapping Prejudice Geospatial Director Kevin Ehrman-Solberg was the keynote speaker for the national meet-up of OpenStreetMap. This organization--which convened in Minneapolis last week--is a collaborative, community-driven project to create an open-source and “editable” map of the world. OpenStreetMap is powered by community members “who contribute data about roads, trails, cafés, railway stations, and much more, all over the world.” You can watch the presentation that folks in the audience called “tremendous” and “amazing.”
