Mapping Prejudice by the Numbers

We are almost finished with Hennepin County deeds. Volunteers have transcribed 170,882 deeds. We have 4,174 to go.

This bar graph shows top volunteers this month by number of transcriptions with user SteveBrandt at 1,219, c-boon at 1,159, and CindaK at 740. We have 2,906 rockstar volunteers! This chart shows finished deeds by month. There were 10,117 finished in May; 10,236 deeds finished in June; and 11,459 finished in July.

Remembering Rondo

 A current exhibit at the Weisman Art Museum, "Rose and Melvin Smith: Remembering Rondo," explores the history of St. Paul’s Rondo Neighborhood through the artwork of two of its former residents.

“Melvin R. and Rose J. Smith were residents of St. Paul’s Rondo neighborhood for many years—Rose for most of her life and Melvin from 1963 to 1968. The Smiths’ artwork consists of urban scenes and portraits that present realist, expressionist, and at times allegorical takes on Black life in America. The works in this exhibition are drawn from their Rondo series—a sprawling body of work that stands as an elegiac anthem for that lost neighborhood and the enduring community that lives on in its wake.”

Mapping Prejudice on Minnesota Public Radio

Minnesota Public Radio host Angela Davis invited TPT producer Dan Bergin and Mapping Prejudice co-founder Kirsten Delegard to have an on-air conversation with Minnesotans about the history of housing discrimination. The discussion highlighted Bergin’s “Jim Crow of the North” documentary and linked racial covenants, redlining and white violence to contemporary racial disparities in Minnesota today. Listeners called in to share their stories. The first call was from Dr. Josie Johnson, legendary civil rights pioneer, who led the campaign to pass the first fair housing law in the nation here in Minnesota in 1962. New Exhibit in St. Paul

A Ramsey County version of the "Owning Up" exhibit just opened at the headquarters of the St. Paul Area Association of Realtors. Curator Denise Pike worked with the realtors group to create the installation, which was recently featured in the Pioneer Press. The exhibit is portable and SPAAR envisions loaning it to other community organizations interested in hosting conversations around racial equity and housing.

Mapping Prejudice in Virginia Public Media

This piece from Virginia Public Media shows how Mapping Prejudice is part of a larger national effort to understand the historical roots of racialized housing disparities. Researchers are digitizing redlining maps and identifying racial covenants, which one homeowner calls “paper monuments” to white supremacy.
